We were a different breed of fans back then, we had back bone and knew that we would be ok and that John Lyall would get us back.
Even when we didn't come straight back there was never any real protests.
Fans these days panic and over react to a single defeat.
We were proper fans back then not like the new breed who want instant success.

Probably quite positive as Lyall had won an FA Cup so we knew he was a good manager and we won 6 of our last 9 games in the season. Plus in those days the expectation was that you could keep players like Brooking , Bonds, Devonshire, Cross , Lampard, Martin etc when you were relegated. It wasn't regarded as so much as a disaster as clubs could drop back and regroup.

What stoneman said.... I was 12 and probably went to 10 or so games that season with the old man and me uncle... I don't remember anyone turning on JL... and to think it took 3 seasons to get back up as well... imagine that?? However the fans certainly did turn in 89 when we went under... and it certainly did not sit well with me... sad times...

I think its more just MODERN FOOTBALL in this case.
In those days we went down and kept an England international in Brooking for 3 seasons in the second division along with the others. Relegation now means someone like Scott Parker refusing to play at Watford as he will die if he doesn't leave.

I remember reading that the actress Billie Whitelaw (her son was a West Ham fan) wrote to John Lyall and told him he should see the positives and use the time out of Div 1 and regroup. If we were relegated I doubt Dame Judi Dench would drop Slav a line.
MODERN ACTRESSES ARE SHIT

Lets be honest NB... seems to me that there is a lot more gobbing off on here regarding Bilic than at the actual games?? Has there been a BILIC OUT chant... if there is I have not heard it.... yet on here?? Fucking it's everywhere... ?? Not being funny but BFS fucking pissed off virtually everyone and he only got a few OUT chants compared to what JL got in 89...

I'm sure there were just as many moaners around in 78 but back then they only shared their opinions with around 10-20 people, now 1000s get to hear their wisdom ! Progress eh !!

Gutted but optimistic I would say, difference was we had some top players, a good team spirit and manager who had all shown they were good by winning the cup just three years earlier, Final of the ECWC, then went onto win it again three years later and get promoted back up.
Unfortunately we have none of the above now, if we went down I doubt the manager or team would have the character to come back up, let alone win anything for a long time.

From memory it was just a sad day and ending losing 2-0 to Liverpool. I remeber Terry McDerrmott making signs to us in the North Bank. - Wanker!
Sure we went to the pub but not the Roundhouse as usual, I think it was finished by then wasn't it?
Red Lion Leytonstone maybe?!

Lyall was pretty much left alone but a fair few of the players got dogs abuse just like now. Getting relegated though didnt have the same repercussions as it does today though

Bullet 9:39 Sat Apr 15 "Unfortunately we have none of the above now, if we went down I doubt the manager or team would have the character to come back up, let alone win anything for a long time." --------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting point and you have to ponder on that Allardyce got us back up at the first attempt - just!
